Investment bonus for barrier reduction – application possible again!

We are pleased to inform you that KfW is once again providing investment grants for barrier-free building and living. We are pleased to summarise the most important facts for you below.

Who can apply?

The subsidy is aimed at natural persons who are owners or first-time buyers of detached and semi-detached houses (max. 2 residential units) or owner-occupied flats in homeowners’ associations. Tenants can also benefit from the subsidies.

Conditions

Funding is provided in the form of an investment grant, which is transferred to the applicant’s account once the measures have been completed.

  • For individual measures, the subsidy rate is 10% of the eligible investment costs per application, with a maximum subsidy amount of 25,000 euros per residential unit.
  • For the “Standard Age-Appropriate House”, the subsidy rate is 12.5% of the eligible investment costs per application, with a maximum subsidy amount of EUR 50,000 per residential unit.

Subsidised measures to reduce barriers

The subsidy covers various construction measures that reduce barriers in existing homes. These include, for example

  • Design of paths to buildings and in the living environment
  • Adaptation of entrance areas and access to flats
  • Overcoming stairs and steps
  • Room layout and removal of thresholds
  • Bathroom remodelling and measures in sanitary rooms
  • Orientation, communication and support in everyday life
  • Common rooms and multi-generational living.

Combination with other subsidies

The funding can be combined with other public funding as long as the sum of the funding commitments does not exceed the eligible costs.

However, there are certain subsidies that cannot be used at the same time as the “Barrier reduction” investment subsidy:

  • Investment grant for burglary protection measures
  • “Age-appropriate remodelling” loan
  • Federal subsidy for efficient buildings (BEG) or its predecessor programmes.
